Idea pitch

CodeSchool aims at creating a long lasting impact on European society through professional training and easy access to the job market for refugees. CodeSchool combines a one year blended learning program in software development with a tailor-made curriculum according to the needs of EU companies. All of this allows us to maximize impact by 1) becoming sustainable 2) training more refugees for a fraction of the cost of traditional schools and 3) maximizing the success rate of our students.

Where will your idea take place?

Why does Europe need your idea?

CodeSchool wants to confront the problems of integration of refugees in Europe, notably employability and possibility for active participation in society of young refugees. At the same time we want to alleviate a less known issue - yet of major impact on the European economy - namely the current lack of software developers.

What is your impact?

Our goal for the first year is to train 20 or more students and place them in full time software development positions. We will also create a network of IT Companies that will offer internships during the program and employ our graduates on completion of their training.

How do you get there?

To maximize our chances to reach out to refugees we are cooperating with Belgian institutions like Fedasil, VDAB and other local institutions such as Atlas in Antwerp. At the same time we are creating contacts with companies based in Brussels and Antwerp, and later on Germany, that can benefit from the value we bring. Simultaneously we are creating partnerships with MOOCs providers like OpenClassrooms, Coursera, EdX and Udacity to provide a modern, effective and inexpensive learning experience.

What is your story?

Who are you doing it for?

We are doing it for the large number of talented refugees currently living in substandard conditions. We want to give them an opportunity to actively invest in their own future. The program not only provides them with know-how for their next job, but it also facilitates the integration of our students by bringing them in contact with local peers (mentors) and companies. At the same time, this program fills specific gaps on the labour market and benefits local companies by providing a new generat

What makes your idea stand apart?

CodeSchool is one of the projects incubated by Kiron which has proven success in the field of education. We believe that we can use Kiron’s experience to help CodeSchool become the coding school of the future. CodeSchool delivers impact through its innovative methodology: blended learning. Moreover, unlike other educational programs, we fully focus on integration and employability of our students.
