Idea pitch

A theater play about homosexuality, which will help them understand and respect other ways to love and to be loved. In a colorful Europe not every child is educated in the respect and acceptance of other possible manifestations of love, than that of their own parents. The performance will be played in schools for 10-12 year old children, as part of the sexual education curriculum. The project includes the development of the play and several performances. Children are what we make of them.

Where will your idea take place?

Berlin, Germany

Why does Europe need your idea?

Our aim is to promote tolerance and respect towards the homosexual community (theoretically 10% of the society). The challenge is to help children turn into tolerant and open-minded adults, by means of a theater play that impacts their minds and hearts and which will broaden their way of understanding different forms of love. Many may think that this problem has already been overcome, but the reality and attitude in schools and on the streets is very different. The children of Europe need this.

What is your impact?

Our aim is that one day, independently of the city or country in Europe, a homosexual couple can show their love to one another, without fear or consequences. We aim to make children think and reflect about their own way of thinking and prejudices.
If selected, in one year 2000 children (at least!) would have had to confront him/herself with this topic and would have put themselves in the shoes of homosexual people. The more this play is performed, the more children it will affect.

How do you get there?

Through a professional theater play that will be written especially for this project. The play will be performed mainly in schools. The theaterical team involved, will aim to work for sustainability and self dependance of the project, so that the income generated can be used to bring more performances to other school, centers, cities and countries.
The young audience should have a fun but effective theatrical experience, in which they learn and develop through putting themselves in the shoes of others.

Timeline: during the summer the author will start writing the play. Rehearsals will start in November/December. The premiere will be at the end of the year. The first 3 months of 2017 will be used to promote the project.

What is your story?

Who are you doing it for?

There is plenty of material for small children and for young adults. However, children from 10 to 12 years old are caught in the middle. The children in this age bracket are receiving sexual education in school, this give us a perfect opportunity to introduce this subject. We have considered that sadly, many parents are ashamed to bring up this subject matter at home and some teachers are overwhelmed and do not have the chance to teach all the lessons of their sexual education program.

What makes your idea stand apart?

A theater play is movable, can be played in every school, town or country that is interested. Can be performed by multilingual actors or with subtitles, so that borders are not a problem. Once the text is written, it can be used by others to be performed in other countries.
Sometimes it is not easy to change peoples minds or to make them understand other points of view, unless they have felt it, lived it. Theater provokes feelings in the audience and they get to understand the protagonist.

What do you need from the Advocate Europe community?

Hello People! Do you have any experience doing similar projects? Which obstacles did you come across on your way? Any ideas for a travel grant that could pay for the transportation costs of the crew? It is important that the play is as cost effective as possible to move around with so that schools have the lowest possible costs. The more support we get to move the play, the more it gets seen by children. Thanks for your comments! :)
