NGO Bukovinian Agency of Initiatives and Development
Europe of XIX-XX centuries provides one of the finest examples for the future generations. While being a part of the semiunited Europe, modern regions of western Ukraine were under the rule of geopolitical players of that time. And each of them had their regional heralds of free speech, the opinion of which regarding turning points in history not always coincided with imperial press. We aim to demonstrate variety of opinions in media in comparison by region/nation press using archive materials.
The problem that will be addressed is overall cultural and historical awareness of modern generation of Europeans. It would be a great success to demonstrate the opportunity for pluralism and free speech as well as solidarity of common European problems on the example of hundred years old press. For Ukrainians it would mean that being a part of the united Europe once forms a public conscience that is the key to building a civil society and being a strong member of the global community.
The main indicator of project success will be the working website with the database of mass media materials. The resource will have a steadily growing number of visitors each month. Considering that the essence of the work is research that in this case can last for a very long time, the database will be constantly updated with newly discovered materials. A great achievement will be the use of the website in research and study work by both students and professors, and their testimonials.
1. Developing of web-portal for placement of media materials
2. Contacting with mass media/archives, obtaining copies of materials
3. Placing content on the website and continuous updating
4. Promotion of the website by social media and other methods.
The foremost topics that perturb society get on the front pages which will be digitized and made available online. The newspapers of 1840-1940 published at the territory of modern western regions of Ukraine and of the countries that once incorporated them (Austria, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania) will be taken. For each region several newspapers will be selected based on readership/influence in parallel with cities from other countries and nationwide newspaper. For ensuring the understanding each front page will be summarized in English.
The project is directed at nationalities of mentioned territories who would like to know more about connections between countries; tourists who want to get the idea about the locality where they are going; youth who are interested in the issues of united Europe; Ukrainians who want to better understand the connection of their country with Europe and the culture of western regions; sociologists, historians and those who wish to feel the Zeitgeist of Central/Eastern Europe of XIX–XX centuries.
The project aims to demonstrate and highlight the common history of countries once united in the past not from the angle of history books but from perspective of that time mass media. We operate not with dry historical numbers taken from scientific books and papers but with the data received from resources that were not created for being studied in the future, resources that were created specially for a target audience of a certain time and region, covering problems/interests relevant for them
