Idea pitch

Rummelplatz is a long term pilot project of people with and without refugee or migration background; laboratory space for unconventional thinking and creating, using the countless artistic methods of puppet and object theatre (beyond language) and the abundand potential of a diverse society to negotiate and playfully practice how we want to live together in Europe.
Activities are workshops, presentations and the creation of a transnational network for exchange of ideas, experiences and methods.

Where will your idea take place?

Berlin, Ruhr area with the aim to spread the idea/model

Why does Europe need your idea?

Newcomers (refugees) in Europe are excluded from many fields of social life. Lack of information, economic reasons and language barriers make participation difficult. The right to work and learn, a fulfilling occupation and thus the chance of an independent life is often denied, reality of their life is not visible in public/cultural institutions. We aim for inclusion and sharing. The positive thing: it´s not necessary to travel the world to meet, our transnational network starts right here!

What is your impact?

Establishing a space/laboratory for regular meeting, exchanging, negotiating, working with the countless creative means of object-/material- theatre, researching on forms of communication beyond spoken language; platform for collective unconventional thinking, doing and artistic creation including forming theatre ensembles with refugees.
Archive of documents/material in order to exchange, create models; establishment of a transnational network focussing on art and (inter)cultural activities.

How do you get there?

1. Meeting and connecting with people (newcomers, supporters, networks)
2. Activities: exploring the city, visiting initiatives and institutions, continuous workshops in refugee camps, regular working phases in the theatre (2 weeks, 4 times a year): workshops on objects, material, masks, film and photo, writing, storytelling (often led by artists with refugee/migration background)
3. Presentations of process of the workshops, invitation of public to a mutual party
4. Establishing ensemble, creating artistic projects (eg a play by Mudar Alhaggi) mainly designed by newcomers
5. Ongoing: documentation (archive of material: images, sounds, sketches), reflection, discussion: build transferable model
6. Ongoing: networking with like-minded people and organisations, regular meetings.

What is your story?

Who are you doing it for?

RP is for everyone interested- as participants, audience, commentators, evaluators.
We specially aim on Newcomers, people with a refugee or migrant background,
but also on people that are interested in getting in touch with their new neighbours, artists, activists etc. Our challenge is to invite people that neither make use of cultural institutions nor can imagine sharing something with the new inhabitants of their town and country. And of course for everyone interested in objects and material.

What makes your idea stand apart?

RP creates laboratories for meeting and exchange with new means- the means of puppet-and object- theatre: beyond spoken language, with unconventional instruments of expression. We are inviting people with different frames of reference to bring in whatever they want to contribute to negotiate our mutual future in a playful way. At the same time we reflect on the processes happening in order to create a model that we can exchange, here and transnationally.
