Smartphones, laptops and ipads are no guarantee of the kind of diverse audiovisual culture that reflects and makes good societies. That’s why we seek funds to co-design and establish a new pan-european network for progressive media organisations sustained by its own commons. The network - Doc Next - will link and support festivals, societies and community projects who use media as a tool for equality, human rights and democracy - a ‘european union of progressive media’.
Generally we want the network to counter all forms of audiovisual culture that work against democratic goals - be they created by repressive governments, commercial interests, intolerant groups or simply by ourselves.
Specifically we are addressing the lack of a network in Europe that brings together organisations who work with media in innovative ways to oppose these forces.
To design and set up a network that will be financially sustainable for at least five years. This network will support fundable international collaborations that otherwise would not happen; build a new common alternative media archive and share methods, approaches and techniques.
This network will be an evolution of a project which has linked four progressive media organisations from across Europe for several years. We want to open-up and become a platform that enables ongoing cross-border collaborations between many more organisations like us. We would use the money to fund a 2-day ‘camp’ in October 2016 in Warsaw or Seville - to co-design the network with 25 other progressive media organisation and explore; what this network can do, who could join it and what common resources it would try to sustain and how. The camp would establish an identity, lines of communication, ways to identify shared needs, ways of sharing information, ways to meet again and conditions of membership and grounds for collaboration.
Progressive media organisations. So that’s organisations that support community film-making, youth media, remix culture, citizen journalism, media in campaigning, experimental film-making - anything that stretches the possibilities of digital culture and uses video and film to advance democracy, free-speech and common resources.
The method - i.e. a camp style meeting is not unique, but we think that the emphasis on progressive media, the desire to create an open network sustained by a commons is. But there are lots of other good ideas!
Funding requested from Advocate Europe
These relate to the funding requested from Advocate Europe - not for other activities related to funding the network. Administration (inc. planning of camp, communicating with attendees before and afterwards, fundraising for next phase, kickstarting new projects in network): 10,000 Camp Venue, Materials, Facilitators: 5,000 Transport, accommodation and food for 25 attendees to the camp: 14,000 Funds to support and refine proposals after camp: 5,000
Hi - sorry for only submitting a few days before the end! Anything you can tell us about networks you have belonged to which have had a sustainable funding model, built up useful shared resources and made projects happen that otherwise would not, would be a great help up to us in developing this proposal now and in the future!
