Stichting Vluchtelingen Welkom
As part of the international Refugees Welcome team we too want refugees and Dutch people living together. While the German and Austrian team are quite successful, we are still developing. The Dutch migration system is giving us a hard time with many rules. This is why we want to show the Dutch government, municipalities and citizens that living together with a refugee can be nice way of living for both parties!
Showing society, citizens and organisations that refugees are humans. That they are not 'social welfare cases'. Showing that living together can be enriching for the refugee as well as the hosting family. Showing that refugees will integrate more easy this way, cause they hear the language all the time, they meet other Dutch people through their host family etc. We also want to give Dutch people the opportunity to really meet refugees, instead of seeing them on tv or reading about them.
In a year we would like to have accomplished:
*An open dialogue with municipalities, organisations and society about the situation of refugees in the Netherlands.
*Convincing municipalities and official organisations that refugees living together with families/students is not by definition problematic but can be problem solving.
If this happens, in a year, staying at a hosting family will be seen as a good option which gives refugees a better chance to integrate in Dutch society.
1.Making short films from both the perspective of the refugee as of the hosting family to show how this living together would look like. Hopefully convincing people that this can be great and enriching.
2.Organizing a global event on World Refugee Day (June 20th). With this event, we hope to raise awareness to the refugee situation, but also connecting people with each other.
3.Using social media to promote our project so we can match more people. But also raising awareness, by posting information, news articles and films. With social media we also want to give a more positive sound.
We are doing it for the refugees, but also for society. We believe this can be a longterm solution, everyone can benefit from. We want to get rid of the culture of "them" and "us" and positively contribute to linking people and their cultures.
We want better integration by letting refugees stay at guest family, rather than mass camps. We want more human solutions. There is no doubt that the current refugee crisis is one of the greatest contemporary challenges for European democracies. This is further heightened by the absence of credible political solutions, which has led to a boost in support for anti-immigration politicians. Our project offers a practical, easy and fun solution to the housing problem and the fear against refugees.
