Idea pitch

Inspiring bottom-up approach to green local investments in Poland and Germany by sharing good practices of "Energiewende" in multi-stakeholder forums, facilitated by the EU institutions - for a better sustainable development policy in Europe. Tracking the paths to consensus and identifying requirements for just energy transition can improve European cohesion and develop citizen ideas for clean and cheap energy sources.

Where will your idea take place?

Germany, Poland

Why does Europe need your idea?

Energy policy is one of the areas of the European integration, reflected in the Community's development strategies for decarbonisation of economies and popularization of renewable energy sources. "Energiewende" is a success in Germany, but in coal-dependent countries like Poland it is still underdeveloped. The progress in energy transition is uneven, there is a risk of petrifying the status of "multi-speed Europe". Thus, the European innovation capacity and regional cohesion need improvement.

What is your impact?

The project will result in ideas for green local investments as well as suggestions for the future European development policies. Developing cooperation at the local level will facilitate citizen participation and transparency of the decision-making processes as well as play a consultation role for improving adequacy of the EU sustainable development policy goals and measures.

How do you get there?

The project aims at promoting the idea of green growth at the local level by facilitating bottom-up communication between the local stakeholders and the EU institutions. The representatives of the selected "good practices" from Germany and Poland (cities, co-ops) will meet with the chosen Polish and German local communities interested in green modernization (the representatives of local authorities, business sector, civil society organizations) for a bilateral Trialog workshop, facilitated by the EU-level actors. During the meeting innovative energy transition ideas will be discussed, possible European support for their implementation will be analysed. Bottom-up communication with the EU-level policy makers is expected.

What is your story?

Who are you doing it for?

Europe: for sustainable future.
Poland and Germany: for better neighbourhood relations.
Chosen Polish and German municipalities: for transparent governance models and sustainable investment ideas to balance their budgets.
Local communities in Germany and Poland: to inspire their activity for positive change in their cities.
Households and citizens: to help access cheap energy of quality and improve housing conditions through presenting possible retrofitting schemes.

What makes your idea stand apart?

The cooperation between the communities will be based on the proven and successful HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Trialog methodology, a discourse approach for formulating consensus pathways. During a Trialog a wide range of essential social perspectives is uncovered, based on different experiences and power potentials of the stakeholders and thanks to an argumentative deliberation exchanged among them. The Trialogs create transparency regarding stakeholder positions and open ways to win-win situations.
