Proposal

Idea pitch

A space in the mountains for youth activists and peacebuilders from around the world to develop skills and knowledge, share experiences and collaborate together on new projects

Where will your idea take place?

Somesul Rece, Cluj County, Romania

Why does Europe need your idea?

The rise of young people turning to extremist organizations, taking part in online hate speech, the increasing popularity of right-wing political groups in Europe combined with the refugee crisis sweeping Europe and the Middle East... yet there is a lack of forums that provide a space for young people from around the world to come together and work for peace.

What is your impact?

To build the skills, knowledge and capacities of youth activists and peacebuilders across several topics (e.g. environmental issues, social justice, working with refugees and asylum seekers, peace education, self-care and psychological well-being) in order to strengthen organisations working for peace and, more widely, their communities/societies

How do you get there?

Participants will be recruited through our promotional materials and through partner organisations, and brought together firstly on an online platform where they can share resources and discussions.
From 10-20th July 2016 they will come to a summer camp in Romania, where a team of expert trainers (we have several confirmed) will facilitate training sessions and workshops on a variety of topics. The camp will include morning sessions on self-care (e.g. mindfulness, yoga), several exciting sessions - particularly focused on informal learning, e.g. debates, role plays, team projects; in the evenings there will be team-building activities.
After the camp there will be follow-up - trainers will mentor participants and we will provide an online space to share and discuss implementation.

What is your story?

-

Who are you doing it for?

The GYR summer camp is for youth workers, peacebuilders and activists aged 18 - 30 (although older participants are welcome to apply). We are especially keen to involve participants working with organizations in conflict-heavy areas or those working in Europe with refugee and asylum seeking populations. Ideally, these participants will have a year or two of experience in the field already.

What makes your idea stand apart?

After our needs analysis with several of PATRIR's partners, it has come to light that there are no real spaces where youth activists/peacebuilders can come together to share their experiences and ideas. "Training courses" and "summer camps" exist but this is the only place that provides a global horizontal forum for youth working in the fields of peace and activism.

What do you need from the Advocate Europe community?

We would love for organisations to get involved - help us plan, promote the event, find funding to send participants, suggest amazing trainers who would like to take part!
