Arnika - Toxics and Waste Programme
We let Europeans find easily find their closest polluters and connect to protect their health. The core of the project is an online app that uses data from expert open access pollutant registers and provides them to citizens and communities in user friendly and understandable way to find the polluters in their proximity and connect to fight the pollution. The data will cover the area of the EU.
Toxic pollution from industrial facilities is one of factors that dramatically decreasy quality of life. Acess to information on toxic pollution is a basic need for communities that want to protect their livelyhood. Although governments in EU oblige polluters to disclose data on release of toxic chemicals and make them public, national databases are mostly very expert and not understandable to citizens. Moreover, national databases do not cover transboundary pollution.
Our goal is to make EU citizens able to reach easily understandable and well arranged data on pollution (no matter in which country the source is located) to be able to recognize possible risks and impacts on their livelyhood. The ultimate goal is to empower citizens and communities to connect in protecting environment and health.
The main tool that will help us to achieve the goal is an user friendly online map-based platform. It will be bulit on an integrated database using data from national pollution registers of EU countries. The platform will offer user friendly search tools offering not only data on pollution levels, but also basic tools of interpretation (Pollution increase/decrease over the time, Information on risks connected to pollutants etc.). Also, an international meeting of citizen groups aiming to protect access to information and improve the European pollution release and transfer registers (PRTR) from chemical industry pressure will be organized. Of course, massive promotion of the tool is a part of the project. The application will be available in English, French and German mutations.
The target group of this action are citizens and communities interested in protecting and advancig quality of their livelyhoods. Typically, people living in industrial regions create a pool for this target group.
Currently, a platform offering access to data on evironmental pollution that is user friendly and understandable for non-expert citizens does not exist. The application will use the highly expert input data and convert them to an user-friendly and understandable form that is usable for citizens and communities.
