Idea pitch

The percentage of older citizens is proportionally growing and will play an even greater role within Europe in the future. Thus it is not only necessary but crucial for Europe to support and nourish the international exchange and reconciliation of this age group. Joint Venture 65+ - a joint English language course for seniors in Poland and Germany will do just that: bring people(s) together by means of a foreign language and thereby enable and preserve social participation.

Where will your idea take place?

Germany and Poland

Why does Europe need your idea?

The demographic change within the European community and the growing need for support and mobilization of the elderly ask for new ways and ideas to combat social isolation. "Joint Venture 65+” strives to attend to these needs and offers the older generation new opportunities to learn and engage in Europe.

What is your impact?

It would be a great success, if both participating groups were to continuously improve their English skills by communicating with each other beyond the duration of the course. In addition it would be wonderful if friendships and a vivid – also independent - exchange between the participants could be established and if this would keep this generation fitter and more included in our European society.

How do you get there?

The English language course for seniors is taught simultaneously in Germany and Poland. Participants in both countries participate in a regular English course (4x45 min/week) conveying the four language skills along with the necessary lexical and grammatical components. In two additional units per week, participants put the newly acquired structures to work by communicating with the cooperating course abroad. Besides direct communication in video conferences, the groups exchange completed projects (such as letters, or self-made short films of home towns, or special customs and habits). Thereby both groups get to know each other and the city/country of the partner course. The course is scheduled for two semesters. At the end of each semester the groups take turns to visit each other.

What is your story?

-

Who are you doing it for?

"Joint Venture 65+" is for older citizens (age 65+) in Poland and Germany. Ideally the project it is to be expanded to include other country-pairs (e.g. D-S, D-CS, D-H etc.) and other course languages (e.g. French, Russian, Swedish etc.).

What makes your idea stand apart?

"Joint Venture 65+ " addresses an age group that is still too often neglected by governments and societies - the group of senior citizens (65+).
In addition it supports continuous learning and strives to keep seniors active and agile via a new concept that enables a combination of simultaneous language learning and social interaction among people in two different countries.
