Proposal

Idea pitch

Our world is changing fast, new challenges appear every day and the long-term ones intensify. The old ways of dealing with problems don't keep pace with the tempo and citizens feel excluded from the decision-making. To strengthen the social cohesion and connection Europeans need to collaborate to explore potential futures and make positive change. People Powered Policy Jams are action-driven, innovative problem solving sessions that influence policy-making. It's policy for people by people.

Where will your idea take place?

Cardiff, UK; Thessaloniki, Grece

Why does Europe need your idea?

The European Commission has identified ‘renewing the legitimacy of public policy-making, especially through greater citizen involvement’ as a significant challenge for creation of inclusive, innovative and reflective societies. We want to give policy-makers creative tools to engage citizens and cooperatively find solutions for the most pressing societal challenges such as population ageing, migration, inadequate housing or inequalities in education.

What is your impact?

By applying innovative, collaborative and hands-on methods to tackling societal challenges we aim to develop new approaches to involving people in decision-making and increase citizen participation in policy formulation. The PPP Jams will not only result in creative concepts and prototype solutions to important social challenges, but also will provide methods and build a case for greater civil engagement in public policy-making. This means in longer term a more citizen-focused policy.

How do you get there?

PREPARATION-develop implementation and communication plans, set up social media accounts, create workshop materials & advertising, brainstorm the challenge(reveal on the Jam day), invite local leaders, policy-makers, innovators, designers, entrepreneurs, young people and local communities COLLABORATION-facilitate two Jams happening simultanously, codesign policy prototypes, produce a visual report with results and tools for policy-makers DISSEMINATION-disseminate results and promote the method through our networks and databases of policy-makers contacts from the seeplatform.eu, thespiderproject.eu and designforeurope.eu projects; through social media & press releases, engage with policy-makers in the Ruhr region; present at 5 policy events like EU Open Days & Service Design in Gov conf.

What is your story?

-

Who are you doing it for?

As every design-led project, our project is focused on people and their needs. Social problems and public policies concern every citizen and ultimately we want to improve policy to effectively solve people’s problems and adequately respond to their needs. Through the project we will advocate collaborative, open and inclusive approaches to the policy- and decision-makers on regional, national and European levels. The Jams will be open to enthusiastic people willing to work towards better future.

What makes your idea stand apart?

The PPP Jam project uses innovative and engaging methods to problem solving. Tools such as personas, lotus blossom, asset mapping or ideas funnel proved to be extremely useful for animating creative collaboration. It is not about presentations, lectures or discussions; it’s about action, doing and producing tangible and useful results. But we’re not only going to generate solutions to pressing social challenges, but also demonstrate how to effectively involve people in decision-making.
