Idea pitch

Stories of migration are all around us. Teachers and artists will be trained to help young people in four countries to collect narratives of immigration and emigration in their surrounding and rework them using innovative drama education methodology. The personal narratives of migration will be explored and re-framed in artistic form and shared online to create a network of stories and artistic products by young people on migration. The website will create new communities and be a resource too.

Where will your idea take place?

Budapest, Hungary; Birmingham , UK; Athens, Greece; Valetta, Malta

Why does Europe need your idea?

The word 'migrants' is slowly becoming a swear word in most European countries. The movement of refugees and migration in general is being used for political aims, to generate fear and create scapegoats.
The political narratives are fairly successful in overwriting natural human solidarity, framing migrant and refugees according to their political needs, distorting the meaning of the word itself, and the role that migration plays in human and cultural development.

What is your impact?

Our project works for re-framing the concept by helping young people realise that they are surrounded by stories of migrations in their surrounding. We aim for 60 teachers and artists getting tools to help 600 young people in 4 countries to collect and re-frame these stories by recreating them artistically in at least 20 art project. And come to their own understanding of the word .We aim to create an online community by sharing the work with each other, and also a resource for others.

How do you get there?

1. Training local facilitators (artists, teachers and youth workers) in innovative drama in education methods
2. Facilitators build projects to collect narratives of migration in their surround with young people
3. These narratives are re-worked by the young people, with the help of facilitators using innovative drama and theatre education methodology, and recorded in ways that can be shared online
4. Facilitators get constant artistic and pedagogical support from project staff
5. Art works are uploaded onto the project website so young people in different project countries can comment and respond to each other
6. Open call for for new young contributors to add work and join discussions on the website is issued.

What is your story?

-

Who are you doing it for?

Primary target group are young people in countries where migration is a central and over-politicised theme, and teachers/youth workers working with these young people.
Secondary target group are other teachers, artists and youth workers looking for resources to deal with this issue in many European countries.

What makes your idea stand apart?

The central idea of the project is re-framing through artistic process. The drama methodologies used in this process will rely heavily on disrupting ideological interpretations and creating an 'owned' understanding of the concept at hand. Building communities of young people online through art work they did is also special.
