Idea pitch

Together with asylum seekers, unaccompanied refugee minors and tutors German storybooks are translated into the first language of the refugees. The translations are positioned over the German text in a way that allows for folding it up and thus providing the German text underneath; this way two texts and two languages can be retrieved at the same. These folding texts (new words, difficult phrases, entire sentences) should also be created for school materials. Through illustrations and through th

Where will your idea take place?

Linz, Upper Austria

Why does Europe need your idea?

Refugee children and their parents, unaccompanied refugee minors (for this project preferably from Syria) are supported with learning the language of the hosting country, increase their language competences, and open up new possibilities of integration by participating in a complex project.

What is your impact?

* Meaningful use of existing language competences of refugees *Help and easement when learning a second language, for children, their parents, and unaccompanied refugee minors * Further development of the first language * vocabulary of the first language shall be enriched by the vocabulary of the second language * Increasing the opportunity to participate in society * in the long run reducing the numbers of school drop-outs * • these are soft skills for text comprehension

How do you get there?

1. Netzwerk-Flüchtlingskinder has got good contact to various care institutions. Taking up contact to possible partners 2. Brief introduction for the participating refugees and tutors (our school system, this project) 3. Working in schools, librarys - the focus is not to translage whole books, but only keyword, phrases and words, to help with comprehending the text. This allows acces to both languages at all times.

What is your story?

Who are you doing it for?

Our major target group are parents of children aged 2- 15 and unaccompanied refugee minors, who because of their language competence can help children participation in our schoolsystem. It is known that children with a first language other than German need teaching in their first language – something that neither the school as an institution nor parents recognize as a foundation for successful language learning. This project offers both languages in an easy way to children and their parents.

What makes your idea stand apart?

One of the problems of our society are school-drop-outs. To improve conditions of living and educational opportunities for children with non-German mother tongue is one of the bigger challenges of our times. To perceive refugee children and their parents with their competences and positive capacities and give them a chance to a successful integration is not only of sociopolitical importance.
