Idea pitch

Create a young people’s movement for environment protection, including young refugees, to develop a solution that promotes environmental growth towards democratic citizenship and sustainable development. Europe promotes sustainable development and environmental protection as essential to life, but in Portugal there is a gap between education and environmental action. Also, young refugees in Portugal are a reality and the government aims to integrate them on Portuguese/European society.

Why does Europe need your idea?

European surveys on environmental issues have found in today’s youth an empowered, aware and informed generation, however there is a gap between their potential and effective action, despite the growing need for volunteerism and civic participation. On the other hand, data points that in 2015 750.000 refugees entered Europe (some due to the impacts of climate change), 5.000 will come to Portugal – it is important to integrate them in European society, its challenges and concerns.

What is your impact?

A more active Portuguese youth for environment – a young green movement in Portugal using tools more suited to this generation to achieve national and global impacts. This movement integrates young adults from other contexts and realities out of Europe (refugees) and raises their awareness to environmental and sustainable development.

How do you get there?

a) Position paper on the importance of environmental issues for European young citizens, and top environmental priorities;
b) Selection of a group of youth people and development of two focus groups: identification of one green hot topic and develop a communication campaign to reach out to a broader audience (both focus groups integrate young refugees);
c) A Workshop with key stakeholder’s representatives in PT (environment NGOs, media, Local/Central government institutions, universities, development NGOs, charities) and interaction with the focus groups;
d) Development of a public communications campaign in the context of the focus groups;
e) Public event to present the outputs of the discussion; communication and social media campaign kick-off

What is your story?


Who are you doing it for?

The target group is young adults (15-30 years old), a representation sample will be selected and two focus groups with 12 people each built. Each of the focus groups will include at least one refugee that is living and studying in Portugal. Also, a list of 10 key stakeholders will be selected to interact with the focus group and participate in project’s outputs.

What makes your idea stand apart?

In this project, civil society will be encouraged (particularly youngsters and young adults) to be part of the development of the campaign to their own peers. The economic crisis cannot divert youth from environmental action. Portugal will receive 5000 refugees, 2000 of them will study on Portuguese universities, it is important to integrate them in relevant European concerns, such as sustainable development.
