During the European crisis, national decision making capitulated to supranational institutions. As political competition at the EU level intensifies, the European parties’ agendas become more relevant to our lives. The Policymonitor.eu will select the policy areas which target particular socio-economic groups and allow the user to determine the extent to which the political parties represent them. Moreover it will serve as a crowd sourcing tool for the improvement of these policies.
The European Union is faced with widespread social apathy and skepticism against its ability to manage effectively the financial and the refugee crisis.Low turnout in EU elections has become a rule of thumb while the vast majority of EU citizens are unaware of the important role of the European Parliament as the sole democratically constituted institution of the EU. European citizens need to become proactive and appropriate the EU's democratic process, the policymonitor aims at facilitating this.
The scope of this project is to increase awareness and civic engagement with regards to the work of the European Parliament and its political groups. The aim is to bridge the gap between the Parliament's political groups and citizens by allowing the latter to be adequately informed on the former's political agendas. Moreover citizens will for the first time have the chance to influence the positions of political groups by sending them their own proposals as well as rating their agendas.
The idea is to build a digital platform through which citizens select from a choice of pre determined options their socio-economic status and political issues that interest them. The platform will then generate a personalized presentation of how each political group's policies influence that individual. Additionally users will be able to publicly rate, comment and send their own proposals to the secretariat of the political group of their choice. Finally the platform will include a section which will provide information on the workings of the European Parliament & the profiles of each political group through interactive infographics.
This project can benefit numerous stakeholders and audiences. European citizens will for the first time be able to determine the extent to which political group's policies actually influence them as well as contribute towards their improvement. Moreover it can work as a useful guide during European Parliament elections periods. Journalists and researchers/academics may use the platform for their research while political groups can utilize it as a means to measure their policies popularity.
The project will be the sole platform that allows EU citizens to truly understand, compare, rate, comment on and potentially influence the policies of the European Parliament's political groups. It will help foster political debate and exchange among European citizens from different countries as for once the focus will be driven away from national parties and onto the political groups of the European Parliament. Its an exercise in active citizenship at EU level!
