Idea pitch

The Danube is the silent witness of of Europe’s history. By following the river and portraying personal stories we walk in the footsteps of those before us & re-interpret history from a personal angle. PD offers a new way of storytelling with digital media across time, borders and generations.

Why does Europe need your idea?

We believe that private history helps (young) people, alienated by the political colonization of historical consciousness, to connect with the lives of other generations (past and present) and understand the hopes, desires & traumas that gave birth to the present in Europe.
PD is unique in its simultaneous use of traditional research methods and new technology that is very popular among youth. We know from experience ( that PD has a potential to connect generations, the one that share stories and the one that is intrigued by the world of apps and new media. We are conscious of how the ways we communicate, gather info, learn have changed. We offer an entertaining format that transforms the oral history archive into a walk in public space.

What is your impact?

The main goal is the creation of an open-ended portable model for learning about the past and for it to be filled with content in cities along the Danube and initiate a change in how we think about and reflect on history. We are looking for ways to present oral history outside archives in a fun and creative way that makes private history genuinely interesting for the public.
We aim at creating the PDwalks and apps. The corresponding digital formats (app, website) are accessible for anybody, creating a framework for creative cultural exchange along the Danube that can integrate the web2 & mobile-based culture of youth w/ the interest of elderly in private history. The content can function as a teaching tool in secondary edu. to launch collaborative projects across countries, generations.

How do you get there?

• planning phase: finalizing partnerships, methodology and schedule
• research: materials collected for the content of the walk and the app
collaboration w/ memory institutions
• development: content, creative design, TRANSLATION (bilingual, local language and English)
• production: sound and videos produced, app created
parallel: outreach programmes designed and organization starts
website launched (also a tool for research, sharing, communication)
• feedback from partners and test audience
• PD premiers as series of theatrical walks (in the framework of contemporary arts festivals) in Vienna and Budapest, smartphone apps come out
• Outreach programmes launched
Marketing and PR activities actively inform all target groups about the project throughout its duration.
