Being a relatively young democracy, Croatia suffers from regular breaches of democratic norms and laws by top politicians engaged in the Government and the Parliament, while citizens are willing to allow conflicts of private, particular and public interests as “normal”. We want to strengthen the democratic learning curve in Croatia’s political sphere by creating and disseminating a visually simplified guidebook for specific “undemocratic” situations, aimed for both politicians and citizens.
The physical location will be the City of Zagreb, but most public communication will be online.
EU suffers if its members have ill democracies, so irresponsible politicians and uneducated citizens in Croatia directly impact the health of EU. But, if complex problems are diagnosed and healed with humor in comic book style, this can support democracy advocates and virally educate the masses.
In a year, the same problems will still exist, but more Croatian citizens will be aware about the causes and their rights and responsibilities to strengthen democracy. This citizenship education for masses will enable more civic initiatives to engage in specific issues against failed democracy.
Politics is usually treated as dry, boring and difficult to understand. We will not ignore the complexities of democratic theories, but will simplify the messages in case-based stories and make the principles easily understandable by humor and visualizations. Democratically vulnerable political situations will be translated into everyday language, so that the produced materials will be used as basis for a life-long learning for democratic citizenship both for citizens and politicians.
GONG is promoting democracy in Croatia for 20 years now, using all the usual methods and being confronted with constant democratic failures. But, we feel that most citizens are still open to learning about democratic standards, if they would be wrapped in everyday cases and explained by humor.
Target groups are elected and appointed politicians. Stakeholders are political journalists and high-school teachers. The targeted audience is all citizens in Croatia, but the benefits will be felt by political institutions and in the media. Overall, we’re doing it for the health of our democracy.
Most useful advice would be the experience of similar project ideas and reasons for their success/failure. All feedback from experienced community managers and knowledge about social networks logarithms would be helpful. Also, interest for using the translated political comics would be inspiring.
