Arcola Theatre Production Company
Imagine a carbon neutral bus with 8 artists from different countries, travelling the route of the Orient Express. In 8 different cities, they engage scientists and local communities to create communal artistic responses, navigating towards an environmentally sustainable Europe.
8 cities: London to Istanbul
In 2009 the EU adopted a wide-ranging package on climate change. This focuses on 3 areas: 20% cut in greenhouse gas emissions; a 20% increase in the share of renewables in the energy mix; & a 20% cut in energy consumption- all by 2020. While this has had a policy level impact & significant progress at governmental level, there remains to be a meaningful sea-change at civic level.
This project will allow artists & scientists/engineers to work together with communities to explore the real world impact of climate change & imagine solutions for a better future.
Europe needs this idea to show we can reach across borders to see the impact of concerted civic action. These issues are not limited by national borders, but are a uniting concern affecting every citizen in every country.
This project will share a model & best practice for science/arts projects across Europe. It will link scientists, technology, artists & communities & encourage them to co- create a piece of art. Individual artistic interventions will be recorded, collated & shared online, inviting other communities to engage & learn. We aim for real behavioural & attitudinal change, & understand that this needs people to be actively involved, understanding how environmental changes in often disparate parts of the continent have a real world impact on their everyday lives. By travelling across Europe, we can join communities- artistic, academic & social in a shared vision of a better future.
Part of our project involves measuring the environmental impact of our work; any unavoidable impacts will be offset.
Summer (July/August 2016)
