Idea pitch

Open! Festival addresses urban vacancy by a unique and complex temporary use strategy, based on social innovation, active citizenship and personal dialog. Our goal is to further develop our method in Budapest and share it with other European initiatives entitled to urban regeneration.

Why does Europe need your idea?

In many European cities, streetscape has been dramatically transformed by urban vacancy: partly as a result of the crisis shops closed down, foot traffic diminished and social life faded. As citizens we can also experience a rather positive change, a paradigmatic shift in urban development: in the light of the scarcity of resources the importance of Being a City - developing existing areas and taking active part in it as citizens - is revalued. All across Europe, many initiatives, public authorities, agencies, NGO’s, bottom-up initiatives are working a framework of the reuse of vacant properties. We think, that beyond the local importance of these initiatives, a dialog between them is crucial for the vision of a livable, inclusive and sustainable European city.

What is your impact?

Accessing affordable spaces may contribute to local culture in a stimulating way, social initiatives may gain momentum and expanded visibility by moving in available locations, and initial-phase enterprises may gain more room to manoeuvre and experiment before engaging in investments. After the first edition in 2014, we expect local success stories: initiatives using a space with a prolonged progressive rent model or owners giving access to their properties even after the festival. We hope that the exchange of ideas and experiences with our partner organizations will lead to the testing and adaptation of the method in different legal, cultural, social and economical environments, and this way supporting a more inclusive and more flexible approach to urban regeneration across Europe.

How do you get there?

- Sticking with successful techniques, like intense dialog and collaborative work with participating projects and owners
- Introducing new techniques: open application system, incubation of new projects by old initiatives and owners from last year, communication focusing on the enormous collaborative work and personal stories behind the scenes
- Preparing a manual, that helps other organizations to adapt the methods of the festival
- Boosting satellite events in other European cities
