Refugee camps have the gate open however their remote location from villages, the lack of resources and mobility convert the gate into a closed one, approaching a refugee camp to a detention camp.
Being able to move outside the camp does not only increase the mobility but autonomy and access to basic social needs provided by urban areas.
OCCycling is a multidisciplinary project which implements a bike sharing system together with training in bike mechanics and refugee empowerment.
North Greece. There are many services for refugees in urban areas which face transportation issues.
Democracy includes participation and inclusion of people from different backgrounds in today's society.
OCCycling facilitates the participation and inclusion of refugees into their local society by improving their mobility, autonomy and facilitating their access to basic social needs.
Refugees in camps will be able to participate in the day to day of local Greek communities, gain better access & awareness of public services such as education & vocational training and live in a better environment.
Refugees will be more capable of participating actively in Europe today society.
The bicycle sharing system would include a minimum of two stops. One inside the refugee camp and managed by an NGO from the camp. The second one, in the closest urban area, next to a center managed by an NGO.
Training and workshops in safety and bike mechanics would be carried out in the facilities of one of the NGOs. Also information about the public services available, markets, education & vocational activities runned by public institutions or NGOs, events in the city would be provided.
I have volunteered in projects inside and outside refugee camps, and mobility is a big issue.
Projects running outside the camps would see their impact increased by a higher participation of benefitiaries.
The project would approach local communities with refugees in a positive way.
Refugees leaving in north greece above 15 years old.
The impact of projects runned by NGOs or public institutions working in urban areas would increase. Thus the improvement in the mobility & awareness of refugees in camps would result in the increase of assistance of refugees to their projects.
Advice on potential partners, and any other constructive advice in particular about the operation of the project from experience of similar projects.
