Idea Sketch

Idea pitch

Citizens, mine workers, regional development planners, coaches, media representatives, decision makers, innovative entrepreneurs –change makers from coal regions in Germany, Poland, Ukraine and Russia develop in hackathons visions of a just transition and a sustainable future of their regions beyond coal. They create movies, comics, radio features, develop and implement new participatory methods for a common decision making: citizens’ forums, collaborative governance, participatory budgeting.

Where will your idea take place?

DE Cottbus, Eisenhüttenstadt/UA Chervonograd, Novovolinsk/RU Kemerovo, Novokuznezk/PO Konin, Turek

Why does Europe need your idea?

Transition of coal regions is a big issue in Europe. The project connects affected people and shows successful experiences of participating and being heard, if it comes to transition processes and future visions. That might create a virus effect for citizens of other mono-industrial regions.

What is your impact?

Publicly presented audio-visual productions show concerns, ideas, visions of local communities and lead to public discussions of possible development paths of coal regions. New democratic tools will be implemented that involve citizens and their visions and advises for a future regional development.

How do you get there?

30 participants (P) in every region:
- take part in a hackathon-workshop. Topics: reflecting just transition processes, future visions and develop unusual methods for citizens’ participation in decision making processes.
- launch local media campaign “Beyond coal”
P take part in a joint study trip to the Ruhr region: international exchange
P present an innovative democratic tool to their communities and implement it in a pilot version
P present the project results on the COP in Katowice

What is your story?

Everyone in our team is connected to coal regions personally and/or professionally. We believe that for democratic, socially, economically and energetically sustainable Europe we need to rethink the decision making process in coal regions

Who are you doing it for?

In general, active citizens in the coal mining regions, especially young people are in the center of the project.
More precisely, key groups from different sectors that can make a change: representatives of business, civil society, politics, media and education.

What do you need from the Advocate Europe community?

I am glad for any feedback on the described project idea
