HOTEL EUROPA is an international art project in the urban space. It provokes a debate on Europe out of an artistic perspective. In 4 ‘Conventions’, citizens and visitors of Frankfurt will be invited to public talks, urban walks and evening performances with international artists and theoreticians.
Frankfurt, Germany, World
Since the most recent events in Paris, Copenhagen and the Ukraine, the necessity of a free and critical voice within art in Europe has become even more virulent. HOTEL EUROPA provides the audience with an exemplary opportunity to meet some of these thought leaders in Frankfurt. The chosen image of a HOTEL corresponds with hospitality (Derrida’s term oikonomos, Greek for house). We want to make transformation processes towards a European reality culturally and artistically visible in daily life. Europe should be celebrated as a community, while simultaneously highlighting its boundaries. The participating creative artists address the question whether a different European feeling can be achieved, in order to strengthen the perception and possibility of a liberal existence in Europe.
To date, there has not been an artistic project in public space that gives an unrestricted view of Europe from the perspective of artists. HOTEL EUROPA is exemplary and will leave a lasting impression through the strong voices of its participants and will allow and substantiate a different perspective upon a collective Europe. Those who live, work and travel in the city, will obtain a forward-looking view of todays Europe. HOTEL EUROPA wants to celebrate the intergenerational, but also class-specific changes that were experienced in very different ways and long taken for granted within the European context, as an achievement of the opening and expansion of the actual and mental range of motion, while also highlighting the boundaries of these achievements.
