Although it is held up as an example of democracy around the world, a lot of experts believe the EU has a democratic deficit. They believe that without a European sense of common identity there can be no European democracy. A “European public sphere” is needed to promote this European common identity.
The connections enabled and fostered by hostwriter.org help to build this “European public sphere”.
If journalists use hostwriter to cooperate more frequently and more easily with colleagues from abroad their stories will undoubtedly reflect this and broaden out from narrow, nationally defined viewpoints. By encouraging more stories on EU countries hostwriter.org can play a part in fostering a “European public sphere” and thus a more open, informed and ultimately democratic EU.
Most journalists have a broad network of colleagues. However, it is rarer for this to extend to colleagues abroad. We want to enance the network and thus accurate reporting on foreign countries – rather than only relying on “second hand sources” like on news agencies. Also, in an increasingly globalized world more and more stories are international stories. Social, financial or ecological issues are often linked to the actions or problems of another country (e.g. Greek debts). Research abroad is therefore even more necessary than in past decades. By promoting contact between journalists from different countries we hope to promote mutual and lasting understanding between the journalists themselves subsequently reflected in the work they produce.
1) More journalists on hostwriter.org
So far over 1000 journalists from more than 65 countries are accredited on hostwriter.org. We want to expand this exponentially (via social media, our ambassadors, more partner organisations)
2) Co-operate with similar sites
We are in touch with other initiatives in Europe who are planning to set up a platform to link journalists from different countries. We plan to program an interface which allows members to access the large pool of data from these other websites (API interface).
Members involved should see each other as a network of correspondents.
4) Sustainable financing
We have plans for a subscription-donor-system, a crowdfunding campaign as well as a for-profit sister site for video-material.
Funding requested from Advocate Europe
