Idea pitch

GSBTB enables global migrants to participate in their new city by engaging in volunteering opportunities and creating networks of community integration. We boost local social engagement with international impulses whilst informing on issues surrounding migration and socio-political topics.

Where will your idea take place?

Berlin, Germany

Why does Europe need your idea?

Berlin is in many ways like Europe in a microcosm format and a lot of important questions for our continent are very present and interlinked to this city.

After the last years of influx of creative industries to Berlin and a young European generation using EU’s borders to look for possibilities following the Eurocrisis – Berlin and EU have to find new ways how to deal with sustainable European integration and cohesion. This is particularly important in light of the nationalism and xenophobia is rapidly growing threatening pluralism and democracy.

Berlin can act as an idea-lab on how to, live and organise European integration from below. GSBTB’s multinational community already found one method to ”think European, act local” that could act as inspiration outside of Berlin.

What is your impact?

Our journey from a spontaneous FB-post to grassroots initiative to a full blown project platform was rapid. For every volunteer position we receive an average of 8 applications. This means we have to turn down many people who have great engagement to offer. In 1 year this will hopefully no longer be the case, instead we will be able to compensate the staff coordinating our hundreds of volunteers, developing new social projects as well as more networks for local participation for our target group. We will have become an even larger idea- and project-hub of integrative and innovative social impact projects in Berlin. We will also have tried out our first projects together with companies and universities – never losing sight of our goal of sustainable impact and social cohesion!

How do you get there?

Secure public and private funding to be able to sustain a minimum of 2 fulltime employees.

Set up a small GSBTB office that can act as a project centre, where volunteers and global migrants seeking to get socially involved in Berlin can come to work on projects and exchange ideas.

Facilitate a monthly Meet Up to connect the community and catalyse more ideas and projects.

Initiate 2-3 own innovative projects together with partners in the different Berlin scenes (requests already there) and develop a business model on how to integrate companies and universities in GSBTB also for long-term financing.

Invest more time in networking and knowledge sharing among officials to promote young global migrants as part of the city-landscape and to co-develop methods for their participation.
