The idea of human rights defenders inspiring documentary filmmakers to take up important but underrepresented issues proved to be viral. 3 years since the creation of FUTURE DOCS platform for activist-filmmaker cooperation, there are also thriving regional fora in Bucharest, Kiev and Tbilisi. The time has come to join forces. We want best developing film projects launched at our fora to be pitched to major NGOs and documentary industry actors, to maximize chances they become influential films.
Human rights are vital for democracy in Europe. Let’s help human rights defenders to take the stage. Strong, cinematic documentary films informed by them are one of the best ways to do it, beyond doubt. And forging documentary filmmakers alliance with HRDs strengthens democratic culture.
There will be around 8 impact films in the making, backed by strong partners from film and NGO sectors, with ideas for impact campaigns. The concept of civil society pitch will be familiar to major European HR NGOs and documentary industry actors. Some of them will launch cooperation with our fora.
It is a 2nd step of developing an innovative idea of a ‘reversed pitching’, where activists present issues and stories to documentarists. Resulting collaborations and film projects need further support to become impact films. We will select best projects from our 4 platforms and invite HRDs and filmmakers to Warsaw, where they will pitch to major NGOs and doc film industry actors, seeking support and partnership, as well as working with experts on drafting impact campaigns for their films.
Organizing a human rights film festival I work with filmmakers and human rights defenders and I am aware of the great potential resting in their cooperation, which is still too rare in Europe. My idea of FUTURE DOCS platform was among the winners of 2015 Advocate Europe Challenge.
Our direct target groups consist of European documentary filmmakers and broadly understood human rights defenders. But ultimately it is a general public throughout Europe who will be the audience of the films enhanced by our project.
First of all I would like to get feedback on to what extent the idea is clear and readable for people who are not familiar with the documentary film world and the concept of ‘pitching fora’.
