Citizens in the V4 region are not eager to participate in the elections to the European Parliament. We want to change it. We will encourage them to find the most suitable candidate and take part in the 2019 elections. We will provide them with an online application that will allow them to compare their views with the candidates’ opinions on 20 issues that will shape the future of Europe. We will also prepare the candidates’ bios, collect contact details and display this info on the website.
Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia and other EU countries, lime Romania, Germany or Austria.
People from the V4 countries have been part of the EU for the past 13 years but they have not yet become active EU citizens. Informing them about the importance of the EP, the only democratically elected EU institution, and giving them electoral tools are the best ways to involve them more.
Our aim is to engage citizens more and to improve the communication between voters and MEPs as it is still a matter of her/his good will and not a habit or an obligation. In 2019 we will run at least 4 campaigns helping citizens understand the EP more and promote the vote-smart in other EU countries
Based on international cooperation we will achieve four results:
1) the shareable IT tool for activists in Europe, allowing the user to compare his or her views with those of the candidates
2) the implementation of the IT tool in at least V4 countries
3) a set of questions on critical policy issues that we will send to all the candidates
4) a set of best practices on how to run a vote-smart campaign on the Internet to share with other NGOs and activists in the region.
We believe that knowledge is a powerful tool in the hands of the citizens, and we want to provide them with easy access to it. This is why our aim is to develop a fact-based, yet attractive newsfeed about the politicians who represent our interests.
At the center of our project is a voter - a citizen and Internet user, willing to take part in the elections. In order to reach this audience, we need to deliver a tool capable of attracting users and promote our project in traditional and social media.
The core of the project is an on-line application, but we will also invite citizens through personal interaction to use the tool. Thus, our idea blends all the benefits of face-to-face dialogue with scale provided by modern technology.
Unlike most VAA’s, we do not ask just the political parties present their views, but we reach out to candidates. In the end, it is them who raise their hands in favour of against specific proposals. This approach also guarantees more interaction between candidates and voters.
The final product (the VAA and the database of answers) will be reusable.
Our project is a part of a larger, long-term effort to engage voters in elections. It also draws from 12 years of experience in managing informational campaigns and collecting data on public officials.
