EuroTrails is Pan-European game idea combining GeoCaching, Location-based Gaming and Augmented Reality in a smartphone app to create social encounter and exchange of information and identity.
All, Europe, Salzburg, Austria
For thousands of years games brought together people and let them enjoy themselves and get acquainted with each other. We think that this medium is ideal to transport knowledge, cultural identity and exchange thereof. The problem with social networks is that you only surround yourself by already known friends mostly from your nearby geographical surroundings. With our game we think it might be possible to bring people together from all over Europe. With a smart game design you can stir collaboration and competition and it might make strangers to friends. A Pan-European game would be unique, innovative and could foster understanding and respect for our culture and environment.
If we manage to design a game which brings together people and gets them outdoors to encounter all the beautiful places, cities and nature and even learn something then we would be very pleased. Success would be defined firstly to meet high innovative and technological standards but more than that inspire others and develop a community with this game. If we manage that 5k people play our game we consider it a 10x bigger outcome compared to TV or print ads about the European idea. Games involve and immerse people. Players invest time and therefore value the information in it differently. Our game won’t change the world but if we manage that a community interacts in virtual and real worlds across borders we succeeded to transform ideas and culture from something abstract to a living organism
As our initiative already yielded in a technical proof of concept and playable prototype we are now in the phase of broadening the idea and spread it. For this we have to develop a web platform for the community to be able to add new games, quizzes and trails. Furthermore we have to design the game mechanics so there will be a long motivation for the players to be involved. With our small team we think that the realization and community building of EuroTrails might take up to a year as we already have quite a base community supporting the idea (over 8000 facebook likes) and active players.

General interst and comments are very welcome, specially if you have ideas on how the overall game design could be interesting for a long period of time, as we are still working and researching that point....
