Bivol / Биволъ (Bulgarian investigative journalism portal)
Within the scope of the project, we will continue developing partnerships with investigative journalist networks and media organisations in the targeted (mainly Central-East European) countries.
Corruption destroys democracy and solidarity in Europe while helping populist forces to stabilize their grip on power. We want to launch a news portal (in DE/EN/FR) that shares summaries of high-quality investigative reports on EU funds abuse through corruption and favouritism in public tendering. By targeting journalists, decision makers, academics, and civil society actors especially in net payer countries, we want to force EU institutions and governments to get tough on corruption.
A network of editors in the targeted (mainly CEE) countries with central coordination in Berlin, DE.
Perceived or actual abuse of taxpayers’ money flowing from one Member State to others is one of the biggest obstacles to rebuilding trust between governments and citizens in Europe. By shedding light on corruption, we put pressure on governments and the EU to stand up against it.
We want the EU to make concrete steps towards a stricter approach towards controlling how European funds are spent and introduce this approach as an integral part of the next multiannual budget planning cycle.
Excellent investigative coverage of corruption scandals more often than not fails to cross national borders because of language barriers. We want to ensure that this information reaches important stakeholders - such as taxpayers and administrations in other EU countries. By transferring knowledge and connecting journalists interested in transparency issues across borders, we will ensure that politicians in the net payer countries feel the urge to act on EU level to fight these malpractices.
European integration is undermined by anti-democratic nationalism and populism – coming often from governments abusing EU funds to finance their regimes. As citizens coming from affected countries living in a net payer country we want to reverse this process and so help to rebuild trust in the EU.
All taxpayers benefit from a cleaner spending of EU funds. We want to reach this by creating a public debate on this especially in the main net contributor countries to the EU budget. Therefore we target opinion leaders - journalists, politicians, experts, civil society - in these countries.
