One snapshot - a thousand opportunities: photography as a means to develop life skills among vulnerable youth and straighten democratic values in their communities.
Social exclusion is an issue that undermines the sustainability of the Europe of today. By giving the right opportunities to vulnerable youth, we put them at the center of social change and minimize their risk to marginalization. Our project is original in its approach because it combines visual arts with managerial tools in a dynamic environment to drive societal transformation. We plan to scale up this project in Moldova and in other Eastern European countries with still functioning orphanages. In this manner, we spread democratic values and open the door to a more inclusive Europe. Investing in youth today we are investing in the Europe of tomorrow.
Our objective is to promote social cohesion as a pillar of a sustainable democratic society by addressing the skills shortage that prevent youth, graduates of orphanages, to successfully integrate into their communities. Using art as a creative tool to trigger awareness and build skills, the participants will not only gain the necessary life skills to take control of their lives, but also will have the opportunity to make their voice heard and exercise their fundamental right to freedom of speech. Providing them with a channel to express themselves about subjects and issues important to them, we empower them to be active in their community and to advocate for their rights. In that way, they will develop a positive sense of identity and become real drivers of democracy.
The project will start in August 2015 and will end in July 2016. It is divided in two parts: first and second semester according to official school calendar. The first semester will include photography workshops and a project management training, which is an effective tool to provide 21st century life skills. In the second semester, they will receive art creative trainings and a campaign and marketing workshop to help them choose and express their topic of interest. The main aim is to create and organize a photography exhibition in their community in May 2016, using tools provided during the trainings. To promote interaction and exchange, the beneficiaries will be divided in small teams allowing them to take different roles and manage a budget in order to hold a successful exhibition.

Our project is multidisciplinary and therefore we value any constructive advice given by individuals who have been involved in these domains. We would love to learn from the experience of people who have been brought up in and aged out from state-run institutions.
