Locals and new immigrants are looking to meet each other, but don't find many opportunties. We create just that. Via a website we match locals and new immigrants and they organise a dinner party for their friends.
Brussels, Belgium, Paris, France, The Hague, Netherlands
Every year tens of thousands of new people arrive in every major city in Europe experiences this reality. There is a huge need for projects to manage this reality. We felt the need for our particular idea when interviewing experts and doing desk research as a step in the development of our idea. The innovation that we bring is that we use aspects of holiday and a good time out in a service that wants to expand and enrich the networks of people. Another point of innovation is that we do not simply regard the new immigrant as the person in need for help and the local as the helper. We see both as people who have to offer and gain something from a match.
We believe that this idea will build the city in terms of cohesion. Better connected new immigrants will find ways to realise their potential and dreams quicker and easier. Local citizens will broaden their horizon and enjoy new company. Diversity is reality, and diversity is value.
Similar dinner parties are facilitated by different organisations for different purposes such as tourism, learning a language and for joining expats. Some of these intiatives are quite new, others have been around for a little while and are reasonably succesful. We want to learn from existing similar initiatives to make our initiative as succesful as can be. We are piloting the idea in Brussels, the city in Belgium most frequented by new immigrants. We use Human Centered Design methods. After iteration and adapting Dine With Us to optimal standards we want to scale up and cover other Belgian and European cities.
