CO PO Festival is a grassroot answer to the UN Climate Conference, which in December 2018 will be held in Katowice, Poland. Interdisciplinary space of art, performance, debates, workshops and music events will create a platform for meetings, exchanging experiences and sharing goals of the groups with seemingly opposing interests: Silesian residents and international climate movement. Limiting CO2 emissions in conditions of just energy transition - this is our joint demand.
Katowice - capital of Silesian Voivodeship, Poland - and the Region of Upper Silesia
The event will fill the gap between COP24 and everyday life. It will enhance the debate about the impact of environmental policy on local community and encourage the citizens to take action for sustainable future. International program will promote the transnational understanding of ecology.
First, it will result in networking and future collaborations between the residents of Silesia, climate activists, artists and scholars both from the region and Central Europe. Second, it will raise the environmental consciousness and promote taking the civic action for just energy transition.
The CO PO Festival week will consist of number of events of different kinds: from debates and workshops, through exhibitions and theatre plays, to concerts and parties - all promoting the civic engagement. We will create an unusual fusion of culture, activism and academical knowledge to reflect on the region’s history from today’s perspective of urgent necessity of energy transition and together think of its greener and more sustainable future.
Having different backgrounds (activism, NGO, contemporary art) we all believe in fact, that there is no democracy, nor art on a dead planet. Believing in the power of collectivity, we want to take action and encourage others to act.
First, the actions will gather mainly local audience. The aim is to broaden knowledge and ecological consciousness among Silesian citizens. Second, the activities will attract activists, teachers, students, intellectuals, artist - both local and those, who will come to COP24 from elsewhere.
Ideas to work with / invite local communities, especially minors and their families. How to make vision of energy transition attractive for local communities in mining region? How to build trust among the distrustful of each other groups around the idea of deliberative energy transition?
