We propose the creation of a European platform for socially engaged art. It will feature an image vault with visual art on human rights & social issues, free to use for nonprofit outreach and campaigning. Through a series of thematic calls for artworks, focusing on issues like shrinking civic space, populism, xenophobia, we will give activists across Europe new tools and ideas how to better fight for human rights advancement and protection in a climate of growing recession of democratic values.
The online platform will be promoted all across Europe. We envision a final exhibition in Brussels
The populist and demonizing narratives in Europe warrant the use of innovative approaches to bolster activism. Our platform will better equip activists – as art is a powerful tool to raise awareness, inspire communities, and galvanize support for legislative or policy change.
Creating a vault of powerful visual content, open and free to use for nonprofit purposes, will push engagement - the public engages much more with visual information; and expand the base - through thought-provoking, empathy-inducing visuals, the issues will reach beyond their usual audiences.
We will create a rich vault of visual artworks, covering a number of Europe-relevant issues, published under a CC license that lets activists and nonprofits remix, tweak, and build upon the work non-commercially. We will engage artists through challenges that are incentivised by small monetary awards, as well as by publicity (incl. a final exhibition in Brussels). We will reach activists through a vast campaign, with the help of partner networks (EASPD, Social Platform, Civicus).
Both our organizations experience the shrinking space for civic society on a daily basis. Our missions aim to engage more people in civic activism, and we are successfully implementing art and creativity as powerful algorithms to communicate key issues to large audiences, and drive participation.
The key beneficiaries of the project are civil society organizations and activists across Europe. Furthermore, the platform will benefit artist thorough providing opportunities to engage socially, get recognition and visibility. The larger civil society in Europe is the key audience for the project.
We will be happy to receive advice about increasing the stakeholders involvement, as well as about promotion and marketing of the platform.
