Idea pitch

Chain Game is a participatory public art project that will foster the cultural exchange from city to city. Images will be captured and collected in one city and interpreted and installed in the next. Cultural links will be forged transnationally and art will be created by citizens themselves.

Where will your idea take place?

Vitoria, Spain, Stockholm, Sweden, Wroclaw, Poland

Why does Europe need your idea?

Every link in a chain is as important as the next and each piece strengthens the whole. An international public art project of this nature will create bonds that are both material and intangible. Just as Europe is diverse and has strength in its diversity, each town, region and country that participates in this project will find that they are part of something bigger. They will also see their particularities reflected in each public art piece. Messages will travel in the form of personal stories, and contemporary realities, all products of a truly participatory process.
This project will speak to the collaborative culture within the European union and it is expandable and aplicable in almost any contexts.

What is your impact?

Collaborative participatory art brings people together for a common goal which becomes even more significant when the artwork is meant to be a part of the urban landscape. By providing access to proper materials, methods and professional artists to guide the process, community art can compete with institutional models of public art. Not only do the works serve to transform public space, but the processes with which they were created foment social cohesion. Citizens take an active role in the culture of their city rather than simply being passive consumers of institutional cultural products. Empowering citizens to participate actively and to be enthusiastic about sharing their culture with other cities is the primary goal. 6 projects in 6 cities and a chain will be created.

How do you get there?

1. Create a virtual platform (webpage) that explains the project and compiles interested participants and ideas from possible host cities.
2. Connect with neighborhood associations, arts orgs. NGOs, etc. in 6 European towns interested in participating in the project, accessing their networks and establishing relationships with the city to find an appropriate location for the public artwork.
3. Assigning a lead artist to the project responsible for the process of gathering images through participatory dynamics.
e.g.: open workshops, portable studio (photography and painting), community engagement through direct social dynamics (public presentations, exhibits, informational flyers, etc.)
4. Create an audio-visual record to share with the next city/town.
5. Repeat in new city/town.
