Idea pitch

Young Croats and Serbs trying to overcome the consequences of war by making together a catalogue of children's and young adult books promoting differences and tolerance, and illustrating those books on large promotional city murals in their hometowns.

Where will your idea take place?

Belgrade, Serbia, Pula, Croatia

Why does Europe need your idea?

This project puts together young people from two countries still struggling with mentally destructive consequences of recent wars. They join their efforts to broaden their peers' educational horizons, inspire them to read more, and offer them some intriguing books on overcoming hostilities and accepting differences. Also, they offer them something they lack very much - a comprehensive catalogue of children's and young adult books with reviews written by their own peers. All these promotional efforts will have a kind of large ads, in a form of very visible legal city murals. We believe this could inspire young people in other countries to deal with existing social controversies in a creative way.

What is your impact?

Groups of teenage activists will be formed in Croatia and Serbia, involving about 50 young people. They will write their own reviews of the three chosen books common for both countries, as well as a number of reviews of similar books by their own choice.
Young graffiti artists will paint three large murals in each country, inspired by the chosen books. Painting those murals will be accompanied by many promotional activities and debates, and donating books to local libraries.
Young project participants will publish their reviews at an online catalogue of the children's books on differences and tolerance, using some positive experiences from Scandinavia. Also, they will publish their reviews as small printed catalogues to be delivered for free at the promotions and to local libraries.

How do you get there?

• Summer 2015: expert members of the project teams from both countries prepare methodological framework for the workshops and agree upon the choice of books
• September 2015 - March 2016: at the workshops, young people in both countries read and discuss the same three books, and then write reviews of those books, as well as of some other shortlisted books by their own choice
• November 2015 - May 2016: all the book reviews are published on a Web catalogue and as a printed edition
• April - May 2016: chosen books are illustrated by ethnically mixed graffiti crews in a form of large city murals; making murals is synchronised with a series of presentations in both countries
• June 2016: final presentation is held in both countries, including the finished brochure on the project's legacy
