Idea pitch

Promoting itself as a film club/festival, Black Pearl creates a social platform for hard-talk discussions about the relationship between an individual and the power. It stimulates awareness in young people that democracy is a value that can be easily lost without active public participation.

Why does Europe need your idea?

The highly negative youth voter turnout in EP elections and the reluctance people aged 18 to 24 have shown in exercising their right to vote is very alarming. The success of our project will be beneficial for all Europe, we will create a strong platform that talks to young people about politics in their terms, therefore creating a tradition that can easily be transformed elsewhere. We intend to invite NGO’s, European youth organizations and people who care to share our experience and create awareness in Europe what a potential danger Baltic countries are facing.

What is your impact?

Political activity between European youth is on obvious decline. Our goal is to motivate young people to vote and be aware that it can directly influence their lives. We are expecting a rise of youth participation in polls next year.

We will invite Europeans from different fields - filmmakers, philosophers, architects and NGO’ s to give them possibility to understand deeper our society at the very fragile political situation and to create a network and tradition for young people to participate in politics in EU.

In more practical sense we will work close with LGBT NGO Mosacic to help them change the partnership law through the debates with politicians and on the social platform My Voice, inviting all our audience to sign the petition. The goal is to gather 10 000 necessary signatures.

How do you get there?

Black Pearl will be launched in October 2015 in a festival form and widely publicized. It will be followed by regular film shows, using already existing film club as a platform. The place is a culture house, very popular between young people. We have tried similar approach there and believe that it works.

We will work closely with Oberhausen Film Festival, Movies that Matter and festival scouts to create a carefully selected program. Each of our team will have a focused assignment – one will focus on selectio, the other will manage copyrights/financial issues etc.

We will contact early and make a list of potential people for discussions. Once the programming is clear, we will approach educational institutions and social media experts in order to create potential audience awareness.

We’d like to hear about similar activities in Europe and help us find more partner organizations in Europe who care about similar issues. We’d also like to hear a feedback of this idea in general, also about marketing ideas and unusual ways how to promote the project.
