There are few things more beautiful than the sense of unity we can experience with live music. No matter what country we come from or what is our faith, we all speak the same language when it comes to music! “We Jam” will bring music to the immigration route in Europe. Refugees will have the opportunity to share their culture and transmit their musical heritage through music discovery workshops, jam sessions and concerts made locals. Just imagine what new music trends will emerge from this!
Since the intensification of the migration flow in Europe, we have been witnessing a sense of desperation in governments and in people. This is lived mostly in the form of crisis. Media shows confrontations and animosity between migrants and locals and growing despair among refugees. However, this “crisis” has also generated many acts of solidarity, revealing the real European spirit. We want to be a part of these actions building social bonds and overcoming the sense of despair with music.
Our aim is to create a sense of unity amongst those who share our musical environment. Being given the space to transmit their culture and their emotions through music, refugees will feel appreciated and regain their self-esteem. Instead of denying, we would embrace differences. We wish to give local community a chance to experience the encounter with the refugees in a more positive way. And we want to allow people to enjoy themselves and share a moment of pleasure, like we always do in summer!
Our caravan will travel to major migrant camps (Idomeni, Lampedusa and 2 others), storing music instruments, and a tent where we will animate our activities. In each destination, a communication team will advertise our activities among locals and refugees. A first concert with local musicians will take place to introduce refugees to local music traditions and start an exchange with locals. Throughout the week our music teacher will animate daily workshops (choir; corporal percussion; instrument building with recycled material), where a common repertoire will be constructed (refugees musical traditions) and presented in a concert at the end of our stay. Our sound technician and musicians will animate jam session in the evenings.. The experience will be registered and shared online.
We are doing this for the refugees living in the migrant camps in Europe, and that have been confronted with a lot of difficulty and loss throughout their journey; for the local european citizens seeking ways to establish a constructive bond with immigrants; for musicians (refugees or europeans) that look for creative spaces to make music; and for all those travelers coming to Europe in the summer looking for music festivals.
We would love it if musicians or music lovers eager to witness the emergence of a new musical movement would join us in our journey! Our philosophy is: the more the merrier!
