Center of Resources for Social Inclusion CRIS
If the poor Roma children can't go to school, the school will come to them. An innovative and practical project, Education on Wheels, will travel around 5 of the most segregated and disadvantaged Roma communities in Romania, offering poor Roma children a chance to learn. They key component of the project is a bus designed as a mobile classroom to provide alternative educational facilities to poor Roma children. The Education on Wheels reaches out to them by bringing a school to where they live.
Mimiu, Plaiul Campinei, Obor, Batal and Ditesti - Romania
The main challenge we are addressing is poverty. The children we target are poor Roma children. They want to go to school but poverty prevents them. They have no clothes, shoes, food or school supplies. It is celebration in their house when they have bread to eat. Often they fall asleep starving. I know the feeling, I was a poor Roma boy, raised from begging until the age of four, but education saved me, because someone, someday, helped me to go to school. Today, I am a graduate of Harvard.
1.We are aiming to provide education and support to a number of 50 never been to school poor Roma children aged between 6-9, from 5 most segregated Roma communities in Romania.
2. We are aiming to nurture 50 poor Roma children's cognitive, emotional and social competencies.
3. We are aiming to mentor and make 50 poor Roma children role models for others in their communities.
4. We are aiming to enroll in formal schools 50 poor Roma children after one year.
1. Buying a bus.
2. Transforming the bus in a mobile classroom ( desks, chairs, blackboard, etc.)
3.Building a team of teachers, school mediators, community facilitators and volunteers to implement the activities.
4.Basic literacy classes - 2 hour classes/community/day. Classes attempt to impart the 3 Rs (reading, writing and arithmetic skills) in a non-formal setting.
5.Educational sessions on social skills - Sessions are held on the bus to instill social skills like basic hygiene, health and safety. Such meetings often turn into problem solving sessions that address some of the unique problems faced by the kids.
6.Recreation and educational filed visits - The bus is also utilized to take the kids on field visits to museums, the zoo, etc.
We are doing it for 50 poor Roma children from 5 of the most segregated Roma communities in Romania. They are children who never been in school because of poverty. Imagine a 6 year old, boy or girl, searching for scrap in landfills together with their parents. They sell the scrap and with the money they buy food. Imagine children of school age, staying in the cold days of winter in front of a church, begging for food to eat. How would you feel if they were your children?
Dear friends I kindly ask you to become friends of the 50 poor Roma children we are trying to help. If you have clothes, shoes from your children please let us know at email@example.com. I kindly ask you to support us and come together to fight against discrimination towards Roma in Europe. We believe education is the only way to do it. Do you agree?
