Idea pitch

The project will free some of Europe’s most deprived citizens who live in cages or are tied at the wrist and ankles due to a lack of knowledge in caring for people with disabilities. The project will provide specialized training to work alongside staff at the institution in Lechaina Greece. It will adopt a Training-Assessment-Needs-Programme-Review approach with clinical experience local knowledge and activism supported by experts who bring best practice from across Europe.

Where will your idea take place?

Infirmary for Chronic Diseases (ICD), ex KEPEP Lechainá. Ilia Prefecture, Peloponissos, Greece.

Why does Europe need your idea?

Θ.Χ.Π. (ex KEPEP) is a 54 place institution for disabled in Lechainá, Greece. It has no interaction with the local community. Due to a serious staff shortfall, a lack of knowledge and specialised care needs, residents are tethered at the wrist and ankles or live in wooden cages without any kind of stimulation. Their life opportunities and basic human rights are violated. As most of them do not have verbal communication skills or an advocate to represent them, they cannot defend these rights.

What is your impact?

Improve the lives of the residents abandoning incarceration and tethering
Offer training and support to Θ. Χ. Π. staff for individual assessment and care plans
Promote residents’ independence and integration
Offer communication opportunities promoting their rights
Create events that bring together the residents of
Θ. Χ. Π. with the community
Evaluate and measure the distance travelled and publish findings
Create a lasting legacy to influence the type of care that other ICD facilities offer

How do you get there?

We will begin with a symposium to agree the project’s operational plans. Training will be carried out with Θ.Χ.Π. staff to share skills and know how to map the global needs of each individual. A UK nurse will work alongside a member of the Θ.Χ.Π. alliance with knowledge of Greek society and the health care system. The project will be supported by a volunteer coordinator and two community activities workers. The volunteer coordinator will vet recruit and support students and community members engaged in the project. The community activities staff will forge links with community groups and the local Mayor, to enlist support for integrated opportunities. The school in Lechaina has already expressed an interest in working together on a programme of integration for Θ. Χ. Π. Residents.

What is your story?

Who are you doing it for?

As 3 experienced NGOs we share a common goal in improving the lives of Θ. Χ. Π. residents. A BBC report and a recent film by disabled activists highlighted the terrible conditions inside the institution. Despite this media exposure very little has changed at Θ. Χ. Π. Therefore this application is being made to attract funds from Advocate Europe to begin this urgent process for change and improve the lives of Θ. Χ. Π. residents.

What do you need from the Advocate Europe community?

Bring Changes to Θ. Χ. Π. is an online network that involves people of varying skills and backgrounds. It is from this European Citizen partnership that this initiative has been developed. We will continue to use this platform for support and inspiration as well as the Advocate Europe platform to regularly share the findings of our evaluation team for critical feedback. We are also very keen to share opportunities for volunteering and involve people from the platform who have specialist skills
