Imagine you see an object and, just by looking at it, you know its meaning in a foreign language. Wouldn’t that be life changing? European communicative integration is at the heart of our project: We develop stickers with basic vocabulary, icons and pronunciation in Arabic letters, to tag objects in refugee camps. This first-aid, self-learning and orientation tool improves the refugees’ arrival experience, and is a first step towards social inclusion. A sticker to face the refugees crisis!
Berlin, Germany and Modena, Italy
Thousands of refugee camps in the EU are assisting newcomers and foster their integration, but mostly, there are no or not enough resources for language learning. We aim at improving migrant’s “arrival experience”: by introducing basics of the new language in their day-to-day life in the camp, we offer a first-aid tool to reduce the feeling of disorientation. Also, the stickers can easily be used in classes as a new learning material even for students who cannot read or write in any language.
The stickers will enhance the newcomers’ learning experience of an EU language: Tagging objects in camps allows them to learn basic vocabulary and, a year from now, this starting point empowered them to broaden their language skills and to interact with their new environment. Moreover, the stickers will improve the organization and communication in camps and dedicated housing by providing a framework of common words used by refugees of different nationality, social workers and volunteers.
Our concept has been co-created with refugees and other migrants. By now, we developed two different prototypes. They will be tested in refugee camps in the next weeks to receive further feedback from our users and improve our final product (e.g. by adding a QR code as listening tool). Our next step is the creation of 100 vocabulary stickers including nouns and basic verbs as a starting point for implementation. Moreover, we plan to:
(a) create an online platform where users can download stickers and share best practices (e.g. self produced materials, distance learning models and training)
(b) add more vocabulary and include basic grammar
(c) disseminate the project into other EU countries, starting with Italy
We focus on LEARNERS: new-comers, in particular refugees and migrant workers, arriving or moving in the EU. They can use the stickers as a tool of self-learning and orientation. Additionally, our project benefits two further groups mainly: TEACHERS will benefit from students with basic knowledge as well as a platform where they can download material and exchange best practices. PEOPLE WORKING IN REFUGEE CAMPS will benefit from a common language base.
We struggled a bit when visualizing the plural for a diverse audience without making the sticker too crowded. Do you have a good idea? And we are still ideating on visualizing verbs and grammar! Furthermore any ideas for helping illiterate learners learning a language with our stickers are very welcome! And of course any other ideas as well! Thanks a lot for helping :)
