When an architect comes to live in a new country what happens? She opens a restaurant. And a nurse? Obviously, she will launch a singing competition. We want to use Ashoka European network to support the leaders of migrant groups in CEE countries, in order for them to effectively encourage newcomers to release their energy and constructive activity in their new homes.
The arrival of hundreds of thousands of refugees on European shores is one of the most pressing social and humanitarian challenges facing the continent. Much of the media debate and political response positions the refugees either as a group in need of urgent support from government and charities or as a potential threat to the economic, cultural and security interests of European nations.
Among the people we call migrants there are hundreds of able, decent persons whose activity can be mobilised by wise leaders. The natural leaders can release the migrants’ energy and constructive activity. The leaders must work independently, but not alone. We will support the leaders of migrant groups in order for them to effectively encourage newcomers to release their energy and constructive activity in their new, European home.
1) Search among migrant cohorts for exceptional leaders and changemakers. People who are focused on "doing good" and already have experience – they were already doing something in their country but were stopped by poverty, persecution, war or terror; 2) Ask the leaders how they can make an impact on their comrades’ misery? How can they help panicked, desperate people go back to being resourceful and cooperative?; 3)Support them with our knowledge, familiarity of Polish and other local realities, networks and financially in implementation of their ideas.
The migrant community in Europe especially its changemaking leaders but also members of the societies of the un-prepared European post communist countries such as Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, especially Key Opinion Leaders.
If any of the applicants feel they would like to participate, we are more than happy to create this kind of accelerators (or BLASTs as we call them) in any European country where Ashoka office is. Please let us know and we will get in touch with our Ashoka colleagues to see what can be done. Let's create a changemaker Europe.
