Alternative Media School intends to involve 30 young people from Armenia and Turkey in 8 day journey of discovering one another through learning Media Literacy, Information Technologies and Citizen Journalism, producing media, working in mixed groups and living together. The main goal of the project is to build competences of 30 Armenian and Turkish young people in using digital media as a tool for promotion of Armenia-Turkey dialogue, tolerance, democratic values, and active citizenship.
Due to lack of communication, the view of "otherness" in media and number of historical and political issues young people from Armenia and Turkey have developed stereotypes towards each other and live in societies full of prejudices and hatred. The lack of alternative media channels leads to intolerance among youth. However, we believe that the potential of alternative media technologies and internet can be expanded and used for reconciliation and peace-building.
We aim to change the perspectives of young participants from Armenia and Turkey towards each other and contribute to the normalization process of Armenia-Turkey relations through building capacity of 30 young people in media literacy and Information Technologies. Our intention is to generate about multipliers – young people with enthusiasm, progressive values, willingness to make social and political changes in their societies and capable to raise their voice through Alternative Digital Media.
Alternative Media School will bring together 15 young people from Armenia and 15 young people from Turkey for 8 day long Meeting on Media Literacy, Citizen Journalism and ICT. We have developed innovative media-pedagogical concepts of education and qualification in the field of ICT and new media. Through the School young people involved will develop their skills in effective use of ICT and alternative media, will complete a community research and will work on concrete media products and will create media products (movies, interviews, photo-exhibition, radio, articles, etc). We offer our participants new attractive means of communication and media which can be effectively used by them for peace building process between Armenia and Turkey and in their work and daily life.
Young multipliers from Armenia and Turkey are the main target of the project. We target those young people who would like to engage in common project with each other and are interested in ICT and Alternative media. They should have interest to engage in their communities and promote Armenian-Turkish dialogue. An experience in active citizenship education and community engagement will be also required. Local communities of the participants are another main target of the project.
If there are any ideas, advice on media products or scenarios that can contribute to the project or in general to address our topic, we'll be glad to get them here on the platform. During the School our participants will have a chance to travel in Armenia and meet locals, spread the word about the project, get some ideas and inspiration for their media products. However, we are still looking for more ideas and inspiration.
