Pithari, a “bottom up” tool for mapping landmarks through people’s eyes and stories! Pithari in Greek stands for the jar where people would store their necessities, so our tool Pithari becomes a space for collecting and safeguarding memories of a neighbourhood with stories that must not be lost.
Greece, Athens, Attika
Heritage and culture have been always very important for Europe’s identity. Where our project varies is in the peoples centered approach, combined with the traditional means of research. For us identity signs extracted from the people, can be a tool for tracing similarities and differences around Europe. Also we are working towards the parallel safeguarding of tangible (landmarks) and intangible (oral stories) heritage. We not only imagine, but want to transfer this idea in other countries and organization. Lastly, being a systemized method of research it can easily be transferred in other sectors, where modifying the target question but keeping the steps of actions one can abstract different layers of the recent history of any place.
Pithari aiming at safeguarding landmarks & contemporary history, will be considered successful if in one year we will have:
Mapped cultural & heritage landmarks of different areas based on the peoples´ preferences &individual perceptions
Integrated and linked all mapped landmarks with collected data (video, images, texts)
Created an open source platform for addition of future data and initiatives and app based cultural visits
Created a methodological toolbox (handbook) for it to be shared and applicable in other districts.
There are currently many initiatives on recent history around Athens, but without any dialogue between them. Pithari aims at becoming the meeting tool for them by setting the specific objective of defining landmarks related to the recent history of our city.
Historic Research: literature, bibliography& photographic archives
Oral History Documentation (qualitative): interviews
Quantitative survey: online survey with the key questions of interviews
Mapping: all landmarks &stories identified
Data Analysis: curating & analysing the info gathered, planning with enhanced citizens next activities
App &web tools: create all digital tools for the dissemination and use of the data
Off &online presentation of the elaborated results to the public with interactive games and activiteis
Update of Clio Muse app and storytelling methodology with stories and landmarks of the mapped areas.
Internet database with landmarks and data. Clio's newsfeed - news appears every time app is launched.
Any advice would be welcome, as we currently have our pilot project online, others may see the first trial and the central idea & propose ideas for improvement or collaborations! https://pitharistories.wordpress.com/
