KITCHEN ON THE RUN
The mobile kitchen enables refugees to become a host for a day and invite their (new) neighbors for dinner. Offering a place to cook, eat and share food as well as stories, the KITCHEN ON THE RUN turns into anybody’s home for one evening. We literally mean it when we say “Mi casa es tu casa!”
The European Union is the target for thousands of refugees every year, but our governments and societies are overburdened to care for these people on the run. Refugee camps are often overcrowded; the living conditions inhumane. Right-wing parties are on the rise throughout Europe. We want to take a stand against any racist movements and set an example for mutual understanding. KITCHEN ON THE RUN signals: Yes, you are welcome. Please, feel at home!
By putting refugees in the role of a host, we empower them with a low-threshold activity (cooking) to become part of society. We want to convey a feeling of security and home to those on the run; we give them dignity and self-determination and provide the setting for them to establish contact to their neighbors.
KITCHEN ON THE RUN shall give the feeling of home and security to people on the run – at least for an evening. We provide the refugees a shielded place and the means (kitchen, groceries) to become a host for a day. So, on an individual level, we hope to create personal ties to local people and offer a memorable evening.
On the meso level, KITCHEN ON THE RUN aims at generating higher acceptance by the local people for a recently established refugee home. Maybe, we even leave behind a vivid network of civil society actors and/or individuals who keep on interacting with refugees in their community.
On the macro level, we try to encourage people all over the world to care for their neighbors and those on the run by sharing our stories and experiences on the social media.
Preparation (6-12/15): Plan the route of our mobile kitchen in detail and establish cooperation with civil society and public partners at each stop.
Implementation (3-8/16): Travel from Lampedusa to Sweden with a four weeks stop in each of the five chosen countries. At each stop we'll open our kitchen on five days a week. We can host up to 20 people a day.
All in all, we bring up to 2,000 people together in our kitchen. We also plan a range of side events to broaden the impact of our container kitchen:
1) Online documentation of our journey to share our experiences with many worldwide
2) Collection of recipes along the route for a cookbook
3) KITCHEN ON THE RUN as a place of exchange beyond the cooking events: We will be the hub for people to exchange goods, knowledge and experience.
