Children and Youth paint stories of peace in Europe on a canvas having the same size as Picasso's Guernica (7,8 x 3,5m)
Wroclaw 2016, Valletta 2018, San Sebastian 2016, European cities
Europe needs trust between the generations and empathy for the other. Picasso stated already adults tend to lose the freedom of the imagination which children still have. The youth dimension is vital in this transition from child to adult, and this should be free from what can be called the negative cultural heritage if based on a corruption of young minds so that they do not challenge the established system of corruption and bad practices. Since value issues are difficult to discuss, never mind change, the paintings of these peace murals as a collaborative learning process can bring about a much needed literacy combining local news, community actions and cultural cohesion in Europe. Efforts are already under way to link these actions with what is happening in the Middle East and in Africa
Planned are aside from individual actions (in France in memory of WWI, in Belfast to further the peace process there, in Germany the integration of Roma, in Malta to link communities) are exhibitions in Wroclaw when ECoC in 2016 and in Valletta when ECoC in 2018. While Wroclaw shall emphasize on redemption to communicate the European project, Valletta shall be a world exhibition based on intercultural dialogue to include the Middle East and Africa. Special emphasis shall be on art education and on how artists since Picasso have faced violence, and this in comparison to how children and youth express themselves after having entered a collaborative learning process. By combining all these efforts, a better concept of peace through cultural actions shall be communicated throughout Europe.
. initiating actions in 2015 to link mural, theatre and poetry since children and youth need space to learn out of mistakes
. exhibition in Wroclaw will link concept of redemption with the need to communicate the European project
. focus on the youth dimension of former, current and future European Capitals of Culture e.g. Ruhr 2010 as a region in transformation
. prepare for world exhibition in Valletta by developing a time frame for reflections 1914-1918 compare to 2014-2018
. world exhibition in Valletta, Malta in combination with the MUZA flagship project aiming for community actions using youth curators and intercultural learning e.g. schools adopting murals from abroad while seeking to free adults in their imagination so as to enable them to develop empathy and trust for others.
Whether or not others wish to undertake such an action: painting of a peace mural as learning experience when a cultural action becomes a community wide one, and thereby links local with global news about how to sustain the peace effort in the world.
