Approaches to Happiness 3: Sensual Urban Therapy

Who is behind this?

Idea Sketch | Proposal

Idea pitch

“Sensual Urban Therapy” is about increasing awareness of our body and senses, and in consequence of our natural ability of feeling physical well-being and stillness of mind – both closely related to happiness and successful social interactions.

Where will your idea take place?

Plovdiv, Bulgaria

Why does Europe need your idea?

Well-being and our senses concern the quality of all human experiences, such as feelings of cohesion. Sensual well-being connects people on a deeper level than the verbal and intellectual one. However, our concepts of it need profound change. Sensual pleasures foster creativity, so recipients see themselves as active creators of their (perception of) environment and daily experience, against the common “victimization” widely spread in Post-Soviet countries.
Plovdiv is interesting as it`s multiethnic. Like in other European cities, spatially the majority society and minorities live close to each other, still in parallel realities. Consciously sensing signs of otherness and stories of the people producing these stimuli, we develop curiosity, appreciation and tolerance of multiculturalism.

What is your impact?

1. Creating an evolving web platform of pan-European mapping and exchange of sensory webinars, studies, stories, travel tips, photos, sounds, project ideas, culinary recipes, sensory arts, therapeutic design/art, therapy methods etc. for personal and professional use; cross-cultural similarities of sensory needs and practices become visible; an alternative image of European diversity and an empathic vision of what “sensing Europe” can mean in the near future
2. A multisensory festival and exhibition all over Plovdiv with model character
3. Snowball principle: 1 (more) initiative will continue the project in Plovdiv and/or another European city
4. Min. 4000 active recipients/participants in Plovdiv - min. 1000 from Plovdiv and abroad improving their sensory and well-being skills

How do you get there?

regular workshops and interventions, thus participants have the chance of a 3-month-training course; tuning up our senses to pick up far richer information from the environment; pieces of arts become unexpected “plug-ins” of surroundings (cafés etc.)
applying proven research and therapy methods and develop new ones together with experts and participants, e. g. merging competencies of perfumers + ethnographers, meditation teachers + sound designers, chocolatiers + visual artists, blinds + gourmets, theatre educators, ice cream producers + aroma therapists
a mapping evolves a network of practitioners interested in such collaborations
Open Calls address various target groups/beneficiaries (citizens, travelers, ethnic minorities, pensioners, designers) - support of small projects of those
