Idea Sketch

Idea pitch

Beyond Refuge is creating a multimedia learning app to dispel commonly held misconceptions about racism, sexism, anti-refugee views and other prejudices (‘isms’). The website and browseable mobile site will give users instant access to factually correct information from credible sources but in a counter argument/discursive format. Users may search for terms such as “racism”, “sexism”, “nationalism”, “prejudice”, “anti-refugee”.

Where will your idea take place?

ONLINE: 1st in UK, then in Germany and then Europe wide.

Why does Europe need your idea?

Europe needs to renew its guarantee of opportunity for all. Prejudice has no place in this equation, yet it has been on the rise in the last 5 years.
We will enable young people to peacefully inform negatively biased peers in their community, ensuring a more positive dialogue.

What is your impact?

100,000 people reached across Europe.

How do you get there?

The content package for the 'ism' app is going to be distributed to YouTube and directly through the app, which will be safe to use in educational institutions and offer complementary lesson guides and functionalities that a YouTube channel cannot.

What is your story?

The alarming rate success of nationalist movements, an impeding Brexit and increasing rawness of mainstream social media have all had a part to play in giving rise to renewed ‘isms’ (e.g. racism, sexism, amongst others). This led us to conceptualise new tools to combat ‘isms’.

Who are you doing it for?

Tailored for all different age groups and demographics.

During a conversation: Content and infographics are used to dispel incorrect statements.
Self-paced learning: Individuals who want to change a peers’ mind.
Educational context: Mediation in the workplace, secondary schools, universities.

What do you need from the Advocate Europe community?

Links to the Advocate Europe community of organisations and individual supports to localise and expand on the content, as well as to distribute the content in each country. Advice on how to scale the toolkit across Europe.
