Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE)
The European Union can be a force for good in the world – for people in Europe and beyond. But it needs to change course. The European Parliament elections in 2019 are critical to re-orient the EU back towards values of democracy, equality, solidarity and sustainability. By creating a powerful narrative about the ‘Europe We Want’, and sharing it broadly with progressive civil society actors, we can mobilise citizens behind a positive vision for Europe, and help counter a swing to the right.
Pan-European, led from Brussels, Belgium, with online tools for engaging EU civil society and public
The European Parliament elections represent the biggest opportunity of the last 5 years to change the future of Europe if citizens send a strong message about their positive vision. We will lead the development of a civil society narrative and engage the public in advocating for change.
Our shared, positive narrative for the EU will have served as an advocacy tool and alternative to the right-wing, populist agenda. It will have helped reconnect citizens with Europe’s positive values. As a result, the incoming Parliament is more likely to work for a democratic, sustainable future.
Through face-to-face workshops and online collaboration, FoEE will bring together cross-sector civil society to develop a shared narrative for the ‘Europe We Want’. This will build on our existing ‘6th Scenario for the Future of Europe’ supported by 300 organisations. A toolkit and advocacy materials (e-actions, visuals, social media shareables) for the implementation of the narrative will be made available, opensource, for all like-minded groups to make use of.
As a Brussels-based NGO we see the potential for good of EU decision-making, but are constantly frustrated by it. We see 2019 as a crossroads. We believe citizens have the power to shape a more democratic, sustainable, just Europe if we can bring people together in support of a vision for the future
The ‘Europe We Want’ narrative will be developed with and for cross-sector civil society. The target audiences will be these organisations’ supporters – Europeans united by belief in equality, social justice, care for the planet – who will be enabled to share the vision before the elections.
What is the Europe You Want? We’d love to explore what unites people who believe in the positive potential of the EU. And to learn from people who have successfully won support for positive visions of the future. And to hear what tools people would find most useful for sharing our vision.
